Mosaic of the Holy Trinity
This is a landmark work of art. To our knowledge, this mosaic will be the only kind in the world. What makes this unique is the combination of mosaic and a wooden crucifix as part of one scene.
The theme of the sanctuary mosaic is The Holy Trinity. The three persons of the Trinity are depicted in the time-honored manner of Catholic iconography.
God the Father is shown with kingly attributes. Rays of golden light proceed from his hands suggesting his creative power. His kingship over the universe is indicated by the array of stars on a deep blue field, and the aura of golden light surrounding his figure. He is dressed in a kingly purple rolbe. His gesture is one of receiving the sacrifice of Calvary, embodied in the crucifix. It calls to mind the words of the Lord: "No one comes to the Father but through me."
The son is shown in the form of a crucifix. This is the same crucifix which has hung for decades in Little Flower Church. Thus we see the crucified Jesus as part of the Trinity and also as the redeeming sacrifice of Calvary, celebrated daily in the sanctuary.
Below is seen the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. A red field recalls the flame of Pentecost, and golden rays towards humankind suggesting his mission of enlightenment.
The mosaic is made of about 150,000 Venetian hand-made mosaic tiles. This is the classic fine art material, rich in color and texture. It is impervious to time and the elements.
The mosaic is ten feet six inches in a circular design. There is a border surrounding it, matching the marble in the sanctuary. The mosaic is placed two feet over our tabernacle.
Also mosaics have been added as background to the statues of Mary and St. Joseph, as background to the two alcoves each containing a statue of an angel, and as a border to each Station of the Cross.
The lighting in the church has been improved to highlight the mosaics.
